10 Scriptures for Your Marriage

One blog post cannot contain all I have learned about Jesus, myself, my husband, and the way God designed marriage to be. I feel like I can only begin to scratch the surface. In 2014 my husband and I got married, in 2017 we welcomed our son, in 2019 I wanted so badly to throw in the towel on our marriage, in 2020 God redeemed so much brokenness and restored us two that He had joined together, and in 2021 we welcomed our daughter. What a whirlwind and what a gift it is to see the view from this seat now.

What I learned in 2020 was this - God makes us to be one flesh for a reason. It binds not only hearts together but souls. When my pride and insecurity wanted out, my promise to God (and wise Godly counsel around me) kept me tethered to my word.

As the unraveling of us happened, it actually became the beginning of what God was using to make us new. It was in this year, that we saw the goodness of God poured out over our marriage. It was not easy. It was very hard and very humbling, but it was good.

My prayer for you whichever place you find your marriage in today, I hope these 10 scriptures give you a point of prayer for the covenant God has given you.

  1. Genesis 2:24 - Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

  2. 1 Peter 3:7 - Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

  3. Matthew 19:4-6 - He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

  4. 1 Peter 4:8 - Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.

  5. 1 John 4:7 - Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

  6. Psalm 85:10 - Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other.

  7.  1 Corinthians 13:4-8 - Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.

  8. John 13:34-35 ~ A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

  9. Psalm 34:3 - Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together!

  10. Proverbs 31:10-12 - An excellent wife who can find She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.
